Santa Maria di Loreto, Rome

The church of Santa Maria di Loreto is located in the middle of the historic center next to the Column of Trajan. It is part of a twin pair church in Rome; their neighboring counterpart is Santissimo Nome di Maria al Foro Traiano.

The church was built in the years 1522-1573 for the guild of bakers. The authorship of the design is the Antonio da Sangallo the Younger attributed. The dome in the style of Mannerism was built in the years 1565-1573 according to the plans of the architect Giacomo Del Duca ( 1520-1604 ). Its basic structure was the model for the neighboring church, this was nevertheless a of their significantly differing construction.

As a sculptor of the sculpture of the Madonna above the Portal Andrea Sansovino is suspected.

Inside the church there is a statue of St. Susanna, the François Duquesnoy created between the years 1630 and 1633, and the statue of St. Cecilia by Giuliano Finelli ( 1601-1653 ), which was created in 1629 or 1630.

The main altar was created in 1628 Gaspare de Vecchi, Luca Carimini ( 1830-1890 ) rebuilt it in 1867.

Also considered to be worth a mosaic in one of the chapels, which Paolo Rossetti created in 1594. The equipment of another chapel was designed by Niccolò Circigniani.
