Santa Maria Maggiore (Assisi)

The church of Santa Maria Maggiore is one of the oldest churches in Assisi. Together with the Bishop's house dominates the Piazza del Vescovado.

The building

Santa Maria Maggiore was built on the remains of a Roman temple that are still in the crypt to see (from the previous church ). The facade is very simply decorated, adorned by two vertical pilasters and a central rosette.

Religious significance

The church was to 1039 the Cathedral of Assisi. In the adjacent Bishop's house, he took the renunciation of all earthly possessions.
