Santa Maria Maggiore is a municipality with 1262 inhabitants in the province of Verbano -Cusio -Ossola (VB ), Region Piedmont.
Geography
Santa Maria Maggiore is located in the Valle Vigezzo, near the border with the Swiss canton of Ticino, where the valley Cento Valli is mentioned. The municipality covers an area of 53 km ².
The neighboring municipalities are Campo (Valle Maggia ) ( Ticino), Craveggia, Druogno, Malesco, Masera, Montecrestese, Toceno, Trontano and Vergeletto (Ticino).
History
The most famous son of the town is Johann Maria Farina (Italian Gian Maria Farina ), 1685-1766, which occurred in 1714 in the company of his brother Jean Baptiste in Cologne and there created a new fragrance, which he named after his new hometown of Eau de Cologne. He made world-famous Cologne as a fragrance city.
