Santa Rosa Department, Catamarca

The department of Santa Rosa is located in the east of the province of Catamarca in northwestern Argentina and is one of the 16 administrative units in the province.

It is bordered to the north by the province of Tucumán, in the east by the province of Santiago del Estero, in the south of the department of El Alto and west by the Departamento PACLIN.

The capital of the department is Bañado de Ovanta.

Geography

The western border of the department of Santa Rosa are the Sierras de la Viña, a part of the Sierras Pampeanas, which have arisen in präcambrischen times. Their structures are covered by younger layers of the Quaternary. The most important river is the Río Manantiales. The Rio San Francisco forms the western border of the department. The reservoir Sumampa contributed much to the development of the town of Los Altos and its surroundings.

Population

The number of inhabitants increased by the INDEC estimates of 10,349 (2001) to 11,040 inhabitants in 2005.

History

The department of Santa Rosa was founded in 1981 by provincial law.

Economy

The department of Santa Rosa is primarily dedicated to agriculture and livestock, especially the citrus fruit production, the cultivation of tobacco, forage crops and vegetables. The town of San Pedro is the agricultural center of the department due to its silo capacity for grain and its connection to the railway.
