Santa Severina

Santa Severina is an Italian town in the province of Crotone in Calabria with 2196 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Santa Severina is located 30 km north- west of Crotone on the right bank of the river Neto. The neighboring communities are Belvedere di Spinello, Caccuri, Castelsilano, Rocca di Neto, Roccabernarda, San Mauro Marchesato and Scandale.

History

The town received its present name in the 9th century. 840 the city was occupied by the Saracens and freed 866 of Nikephoros Phokas again. In 1074 the city was conquered by the Norman Robert Guiscard. The Greek Grecia district was destroyed by an earthquake on February 20, 1783 and not rebuilt.

Attractions

Worth seeing is the historical center, it is one of the best preserved in the region. The Cathedral of Santa Anastasia was built from 1274 to 1295. The central portal is still preserved original, the other two were renewed in 1705. The Cathedral can be reached in the Byzantine baptistery dating from the 8th century. It was restored in 1927. The circular plan were later added four annexes.

The oldest parts of the castle date from the 11th century. In the Normans and Angevins Aragonese followed as builders. In the 16th century the castle was taken by Count Andrea Carafa in its present state. At the entrance there is the church of Santa Flilomena from the 11th century.
