Covering an area of 19 km ² live 3271 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011), was / is equivalent to a population density of 172 inhabitants km ².
Santana is famous for its traditional thatched farmhouse set among the landmarks of the island of Madeira. Previously inhabited by the farmers in this simply decorated, often red-painted cottages. Today, most are empty and are kept only as a tourist attraction repaired. The thatched roofs need to be replaced every four to five years.
Since 2011, the municipality of Santana by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve is managed.
History
The re - discoverer of Madeira, João Gonçalves Zarco, the island from 1419 was the first time colonize. Towards the end of the 15th century, Santana was settled. In 1552 it was a separate municipality. 1835, the autonomous municipality of Santana was set up and the place was given the status of a small town ( Vila ).
In 2000, Santana became a town ( Cidade ).
