Santiago de Liniers, 1st Count of Buenos Aires

Jacques de Liniers ( span Santiago Antonio María de Liniers y Bremont; * July 25, 1753 in Niort, † August 26, 1810 ) was a French officer in the Spanish military service, and a viceroy of the Viceroyalty of the Rio de la Plata.

Life

In 1806 he recaptured Buenos Aires by the British under William Carr Beresford. During the second invasion in 1807 de Liniers formed a junta with Manuel Belgrano, introduced martial law and overthrew the viceroy on February 10, 1807.

Officially, he was appointed in May 1808 to the Viceroy, and was replaced in 1809 by Baltazar Hidalgo de Cisneros y la Torre. When he in 1810 led a rebellion against the new government after the May Revolution, he was executed on the orders of Mariano Moreno treason.
