Santo Stefano Island

Santo Stefano is an island in the Gulf of Gaeta off the Italian coast, west of Naples. It belongs geographically to the Pontine Islands (South-eastern group) and administratively to the municipality of Ventotene, located 1.6 km south-east of the island Ventotene. The island consists of a rock with a surface area of about 27 hectares and a height of up to 80 meters above sea level.

On the island there is a horseshoe-shaped building, which Ferdinand IV was built as a prison in 1795 by Major Antonio Winspeare and architect Francesco Carpi. There were, among others, Luigi Settembrini, Carmine Crocco, Giuseppe Mariani, Gaetano Bresci, Gino Lucetti and Sandro Pertini. In 1965 the prison was closed and abandoned since then.
