Santo Tirso is a municipality and city in the north of Portugal, which is very much influenced by winegrowing. In the municipality of 14,072 inhabitants (as of 30 June 2011).

History

Finds indicate a prehistoric settlement. In particular, the excavations at Monte da Assunção, but also the excavated fortress villages of the Castro culture of Monte Padrão and Santa Margarida be mentioned. The 2nd century BC Romans arrived took the villages and Romanized it.

The present town dates back to the founding of a monastery by D. UNISCO Godiniz in the year 978. 1097 was the future King D. Afonso Henriques, the area of the monastery at Soeiro Mendes da Maia before it a year later came to the Benedictine monastery of Abbot D. Gaude Miro. The area encompassed 1833, the municipalities of Santo Tirso, São Miguel do Couto and Santa Cristina do Couto. After the Liberal Revolution in 1822 and the following Miguelistenkrieg 1834 all church north were dissolved and nationalized their goods. One of the monastery then became provisional administrative headquarters of the newly created district of Santo Tirso, which covered the previous area of the monastery's possessions.

In 1985, the former town ( Vila ) to the city ( Cidade ) was charged. Until 1998, Santo Tirso was one of the most populous counties in the country, to Trofa became independent by outsourcing.
