Santower See

BW

Nature reserve, conservation area

The Santower Lake is a lying between the municipalities Warnow and the south located city Grevesmühlen lake. The lake is very shallow and put under protection of national significance due to the plant and animal world. The western shore is wooded and swampy. In the lake there are two smaller islands. On the western island you can still find the remains of an earlier building today.

The Santower Lake is a polytropher (originally mesotrophic - eutrophic ) lake. The relatively poor water quality is due to the discharge of effluent from livestock buildings and the neighboring villages until the 1990s.

The water level of the lake was formerly Santower higher than today. The 1710 excavated Schleusgraben has since headed the water to Tarnewitzer creek that flows near Tamewitz in the Baltic Sea and from. The west Warnows ditch leading from the lake caused a lowering of the water level by two to three meters.

Through the NSG regulation exist comprehensive restrictions on the fishing experience. Since the 1990s, an attempt is made to revive cultural and historical forms of use ( grazing and mowing ) to obtain the unique vegetation in the field of marine terraces. This is coordinated by the Wildlife Protection Society North West Mecklenburg.
