Saona Island

The 110 km ² island of Isla Saona is located in the province of Altagracia in the east of the Dominican Republic. It belongs to the Parque Nacional del Este ( " National Park of the East " ), and is under protection. He is one of the largest national parks in the country and is known for its abundance of birds, especially rare species of birds. The original tropical vegetation has been increasingly replaced by palm forests and sandy beaches.

From the original inhabitants, the Taíno, the island is also called Adamanay. The name of the island Saona received by Europeans in the 15th century.

Saona has two settlements, the fishing village of Mano Juan in the south and Catuano on the western tip, where there is also a naval base is located.
