The SAP Arena is a multipurpose indoor arena in Mannheim with up to 15,000 seats. The arena was opened in September 2005, construction began in November 2002.

It is named after the main sponsor SAP. During the planning stage it was called Mannheim Arena.

Use

The arena is the home ground of the ice hockey club Adler Mannheim and the handball club Rhein- Neckar Löwen. It is also used for other sporting events, such as Basketball games, wrestling events or used as a stage for concerts as well as a meeting room.

The complex SAP Arena

At the Arena include two gyms for the ice that can be converted for special occasions to banquet halls.

Furthermore, in the environment of several large parking arisen with up to 7,000 parking spaces and two light rail stops, which is also the largest consumer fair in Germany, the Miteinander benefited.

History

Long discussed a new hall in Mannheim as a substitute for the ailing ice rink at Friedrich Park. In the 1980s was as the site of the new test site in the conversation. Due to the success of the Hockey Teams Adler Mannheim, the issue was discussed again in the late 1990s, the city of Mannheim, however, remained financially unable to build.

The arena was realized by a model in which SAP co-founder Dietmar Hopp and eagle - sponsor the construction of non-accrual financed and operates the hall with a separate company during the first 30 years at your own risk. The City of Mannheim pays the construction costs of 70 million euros during this time in installments. After 30 years, the Arena will become the property of the city. The two training halls were funded as a foundation of Dietmar Hopp itself.

The property was built in accordance with the planning of the Düsseldorf architects HPP Hentrich, Petschnigg & partners by the general contractor Wayss & Freytag. The building consultancy company Drees & Sommer led the project management and the economic and technical controlling.

Included in the transport infrastructure around the arena to the parking, street shuttle, public transportation, more than 50 million Euros have been invested, that came in at about 80 percent by the federal government and the country. The remaining funding was the city of Mannheim, which had to realign their investment planning for this project, which caused in local politics for much controversy. After the first major events turned out that the DB breakpoint marshalling yard the onslaught of visitors after the event has not grown and is a significant security risk. Until the new schedule in the fall of 2011 the holding point east to new Stadtbahnendstelle was relocated and expanded to three tracks. To accommodate the large number of special services and to take account of the often unfamiliar with the place passengers, destination displays were installed. In addition, the new breakpoint was built barrier-free and saves especially wheelchair users to go through the main station Mannheim. The new station is now called Mannheim ARENA / May market and thus points to the two venues, which are mainly developed.

The grand opening took place on 2 and 3 September 2005. The first show at the SAP Arena denied Ronan Keating before about 4,000 spectators. On the second day of the opening ceremony of the Mannheim singer Rolf Stahlhofen appeared with his Mann'em Soul Orchestra and his musical friends like Peter Maffay, Mousse T. and Sasha. On 6 September, the opening game of the Adler Mannheim took place against the dream team of the German Ice Hockey League. On September 8, the DEL Season 2005/ 06 was opened against DEG Metro Stars with the game of Adler Mannheim.

On 21 January 2006, the last test match of the German national handball team was against Hungary the men before the European Championships in Switzerland before 13,200 spectators instead. It was at that time the largest number of spectators of the German national handball team at an indoor handball game. The game ended 30-26.

On April 22, 2006 met Wladimir Klitschko and successive U.S. American Chris Byrd in a duel for the IBF and IBO world heavyweight championship. According to the stadium TVs of the SAP Arena, it was the fastest sold-out boxing match of all time, already after 48 hours were all 14,000 tickets sold. The first transferred the battle and reached a audience of 47.8 % ( 10.17 million viewers) a new ratings record for boxing. The first time was broadcast live in the U.S. with this transfer, a boxing match from Germany. In more than 100 other countries, the fight was also seen.

From 24 January 2007 to 28 January, 2007 took place at four games, the group matches in the main round Group 2 of the Handball World Championships 2007 at the SAP Arena instead. At the Ice Hockey World Cup 2010, the hall served as the venue beside the Veltins - Arena in Gelsenkirchen and the Lanxess Arena in Cologne.

In February 2009, the Live Entertainment Award in the category of Best Hall / Arena was awarded to the SAP Arena.

On 28 November 2012, the Handball Bundesliga match Rhein-Neckar Löwen took place in the hall against THW Kiel ( 17:28 ). This was the 800th event since its opening in September 2005 at the SAP Arena.

Harder13 Cup

Since 2007, the indoor soccer tournament Harder13 Cup is held annually in January in the arena. The name comes from the Mannheim Gebäudereinigungsunternehmen Harder13. So far, the Karlsruher SC could enter three times in the list of winners.

The last tournament so far with the participants SV Waldhof Mannheim, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, Karlsruher SC, SV Sandhausen and FSV Frankfurt took place on 4 January 2014. This tournament newcomer FSV Frankfurt won the final against Waldhof Mannheim in front of 8,177 spectators.

Location and Directions

The Arena is in Bösfeld the east of the city of Mannheim, near the district Neuhermsheim directly on the B 38a near the motorway junction Mannheim.

At the nearby stop Mannheim ARENA / Maimarkthalle trains to the S- Bahn Rhein Neckar as well as some regional trains. To hold events partially else passing trains and operate special trains.

To open up the arena in mass transit, and the city subway line 6 has been expanded to include two new sections. The northern arm ( Neuostheim - Maimarktgelände - SAP Arena - SAP Arena S-Bahn station ) was opened with the opening of the arena in operation. Since December 2006, the arena is also on the southern arm of the route ( Planetarium - SAP Arena rail station Neuhermsheim - - SAP Arena South ) reachable by tram. The line 6 can operate as a ring line, but is divided in regular service at the Planetarium in lines 6 and 6A, the line 6A serves the southern route via Neuhermsheim.

In many events with ticket this will serve as such combined ticket that allows free round-trip travel on all public transport in the entire area of the transport association Rhein- Neckar.
