Sara Lidman

Sara Lidman ( born December 30, 1923 in Missenträsk, † June 17, 2004 in Umeå ) was a Swedish writer.

She scored in 1953 with her ​​novel " Tjärdalen " ( The Teertal ) her first big success. In this and in the subsequent three novels, the author describes with great pathos the harsh living conditions of the poor farmers in the inland of northern Swedish province of Västerbotten in the 19th century.

Their innovative use of language is strongly influenced by dialectal influences and of the Bible language.

Following the first four novels Sara Lidman wrote a series of texts with strong political content. She was involved in the protest against the Vietnam War, against the South African apartheid regime, and for the strike of miners in northern Sweden and influenced public opinion in a decisive way. Starting in 1977, five novels in which the colonization of northern Sweden finds its literary design by the railway appeared. These five novels are known in English translation as " Railway suite" and include the books Din Tjänare Listen, Vredens Barn, Naboth Sten, The Underbare men and Järnkronan. The later title Lifsens Red and Oskuldens Minut are also railway novels, but make no substantive sequel to the novel series of 1977 - 1985.

Sara Lidman have been awarded numerous prizes, including the prestigious 1980 Literary Prize of the Nordic Council for Vredens neighbors. Among the honors, there are also a honorary doctorate and the award of the title of professor.
