Saragosa (Texas)

Saragosa is a place in Reeves County in the U.S. state of Texas.

Geography

Saragosa is located in west-central Texas on State Highway 17 and Farm Road 1215 two miles north of Interstate Highway 10 in the southeastern part of the Reeves County. The town is located near the Toya Creeks 916 meters above sea level.

History

Its history begins in 1880 with the settlement of 15 families at Toya Creek, about six miles from the present site of the village. A short time later, a horse breeding operation was established. As early as 1884 was the site of a post office, which was closed in 1891, however, a hotel, a restaurant and a saloon emerged. In 1900 Saragosa possessed again a postal station and built at the present site of the village school. The early 1900s supplied Saragosa three surrounding school districts. In 1911, the school was connected to the railway network of the Pecos Valley Southern Railway, and the location shifted to its present location.

1925 Saragosa had 25 inhabitants, the population in the short term increased by 1930 to 150, but plummeted again to 25 during the 1930s. In the village there was at that time six shops to supply the surrounding livestock farms. In the 1940s and 1950s the population grew significantly, in 1960 the city had a population of 380 and twelve shops. In the 1960s, the city gradually lost its importance as a local shopping center, and has stagnated since 1970 its population by 180

On the night of May 22, 1987 a tornado devastated Saragosa, 30 of the 183 residents were killed and 121 other residents were injured, some seriously, 85 % of the buildings of the town were completely destroyed. In the early 1990s Saragosa was rebuilt, the number of inhabitants in 1990 was 185
