After Hagar is pregnant, she appreciates her mistress low and is therefore suppressed by it. Hagar escapes the conflict by fleeing into the desert. There, her son Ishmael is born. On God's instruction Hagar returns to Sarah and submit to her after her son God had promised many descendants (Gen 16.5 to 16 EU).

After 13 years, God of Abraham and Sarah a son also says to (Gen 17.17 to 19 EU), although Sarah is at this time already 90 years old. Shortly thereafter, God reveals the commitment again during an encounter of Abraham with three men that are hosted by Abraham. Sarah, who overheard the conversation of the men secretly laughs at the prophecy, since it is "not more women style was made by " her, given her age (Gen 18,11 EU). The birth is thus shown to be biologically impossible. About this laughter is a direct conversation between the guests, Abraham and Sarah developed. The biblical text then changes in the identity of the three men and can suddenly speak about God himself, who repeated the birth promise to Sarah again. Sarah is afraid and then denies having laughed.

In fact, Sarah gives birth to the age of 90 years, then a son, called Isaac. This name יִצְחָ֥ק (laughter from the Hebrew root word ) is explained in Genesis 21.6 EU with the words:

" And Sarah said, God hath made me to laugh; everyone who hears will laugh along with me. "

Sarah dies according to the biblical report at the age of 127 years and was buried by her husband, Abraham, when he can also bury later in the land of Canaan, in Hebron in the cave of Machpelah (Gen. 23,19 EU).

According to the Babylonian Talmud ( Meg 14a) is Sarah one of the seven prophetesses who knows the Jewish tradition. According to Rashi, it is identical with Iscah, the daughter of Haran. Thus, it would also be the same Abraham 's niece.
