Saran (plastic)

Saran is a registered trademark of Dow Chemical of products made of polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) and copolymers of vinylidene dichloride, in particular with vinyl chloride.

Saran is available as a barrier film and as granules for extrusion. PVDC or Saran is an excellent barrier material for oxygen and water vapor.

PVDC was developed by Dow by John J. Grebe and initially used for a seawater- resistant protective film of the aircraft of the U.S. Armed Forces. The first strong odor and the greenish color prevented other applications.

After these properties were eliminated, the films, even in the product for the food industry could be used (for example, plastic wrap ). Saran has food approvals in accordance with FDA regulation 21 CFR and complies with EU Directive 2002/72/EU.

Co-extruded multi-layer film with the Dow PVDC transmits trade name Saranex.

The well-known, especially in the Anglo-American household foil adhesive SaranWrap brand is now marketed by SC Johnson & Son.
