Saratov Governorate

The province of Saratov (Russian Саратовская губерния / Saratovskaya Gubernija ) was from 1780 (or 1782 or 1797) and a 1928 province in Russia. It bordered on the following provinces (from north clockwise): Simbirsk, Samara, Astrakhan, the Oblast of the Don Cossacks, Voronezh, Tambov and Penza.

Capital was the city of Saratov. It covered an area of 84,492 km ². 1914 included the following circuits ( Ujesde ) to Saratov province:

  • Serdobsk
  • Volsk
  • Tsaritsyn (now Volgograd)

In 1897, the province had 2,405,809 inhabitants ( 28 per km ²). Of these, 1,846,436 Russians, 166 528 German, 123 893 Mordvins, 94 693 Tatars and Chuvash 14,403. Religious belief that there have been almost 89 percent Orthodox, 5.6 percent Protestant, 3.9 percent Muslim and 1.4 percent Catholics.

History

On January 11, 1780 Catherine II ordered a decree establishing a governorship Saratov ( Саратовское наместничество / Saratowskoje namestnitschestwo ) to. On February 3, 1781, the governorship was officially founded with nine districts in the presence of the bishop and the governor of Astrakhan. In the same year the new administration area received a coat of arms. Beginning in 1782 it was renamed the province of Saratov (first use of that name in documents on April 2, 1782).

During the reorganization of the provinces a decree of December 12, 1796 ordered the dissolution of the government of Saratov and the division of territory on the Penza and Astrakhan. Only three months later, on March 5, 1797, the restoration of the Saratov province was placed with another adoption.

On March 29, 1919, the southern parts of the province were spun off and formed part of the new province of Tsaritsyn. For this, the Government of Saratov received large areas on the left (east ) bank of the Volga, which previously belonged to the province Samara. In 1922, a portion of these areas to the work community, the later ( from 6 January 1924) ASSR of the Volga Germans returned.

With the formation of the Lower Volga Oblast ( Нижневолжская область / Nischnewolschskaja oblast ) was carried out on 21 May 1928 union of the provinces of Saratov, Stalingrad (such as the government Tsaritsyn since April 10, 1925 was called ), Astrachen and other parts of the government of Samara. Capital of the administrative unit ( край Нижневолжский / Nischnewolschski krai) already on June 11, 1928 again, now in Lower Volga region was renamed remained Saratov.
