History

A Roman road led by the present district area. Sardoal was officially mentioned for the first time in 1313, when it ( for Portuguese: Holy Queen Isabel ) its city rights ( Foral ) of Queen Elizabeth of Portugal, Rainha Santa Isabel received. 1531 brought King D.João I. Sardoal to Vila ( town with enhanced management rights), and the following year it became a separate district of Abrantes.

Around the time of the Portuguese voyages of discovery beginning of the 16th century saw the place a heyday. Thus, the local institutions of charity Santa Casa were there opened Misericordia in 1509, it emerged that seven oil paintings by the masters of Sardoal ( Portuguese: Mestre de Sardoal ) in 1510, the church Igreja da Misericordia in 1551 was consecrated and took some citizens of the place at various expeditions of the time part.

Sardoal suffered looting and destruction caused by some French troops during the Napoleonic invasions in the early 19th century.

Culture and sights

Among the monuments Sardoals include various historic homes, stone fountains, public buildings and religious buildings, including a hospital from 1400 returning, by the 16th century Convento de Nossa Senhora da Caridade with its mannerist Monastery Church ( Igreja do Mosteiro de Nossa Senhora da Caridade ), which already shows baroque features in their equipment as azulejos and altarpieces.

In the church Igreja de São Tiago e de São Mateus ( Portuguese for: Church of St. James and St. Matthew ), there are seven Dating back to the early 16th century panel paintings of the name still unknown master of Sardoal.

The historical town center as a whole is a listed building.
