Sarekat Islam

Sarekat Islam (Islamic Association ), formerly Sarekat Dagang Islam (Islamic Trade Association ), was an Indonesian organization.

Sarekat Dagang Islam, a Javanese cooperative of merchants, was Haji Samanhudi, a businessman in Surakarta, depending on the source, founded in 1905 or 1912. Samanhudis business was devoted to batik, a Textilverfärbeverfahren.

Later renamed the organization in Sarekat Islam, whose headquarters was then in Surabaya took place. Among other things, played H.O.S. Haji Agus Salim Cokroaminoto and, later Foreign Minister of Indonesia, an important role in the cooperative. In the organization, among other things, Sukarno, who later became president from 1945 until 1967. Agus Salim joined the Sarekat Islam in 1915 and represented a moderate Islam. 1917 became the Sarekat Islam under the influence of Marxist ideology.
