Sarmiento (Chubut)

Sarmiento is the capital of the department Sarmiento, Chubut Province in southern Argentina. In the classification of municipalities in the province of Chubut Sarmiento as a community ( municipality ) is the first classified category. Sarmiento is located 140 km west of Comodoro Rivadavia.

Climate

In Sarmiento, there is a cold, dry continental climate. The average temperatures are in January to 19 degrees Celsius, with maximum temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius. In July, average temperatures range from 0 degrees Celsius. The coldest temperature was measured in Sarmiento 1907 -33 degrees Celsius on June 1. In general, the temperatures in the winter on the coldest days to -22 degrees Celsius.

History

Sarmiento was founded on June 21, 1897 by engineer Francisco Pietrobelli. The town was settled by Welsh immigrants at the beginning. The beginning of 1900 came more settlers from Lithuania. After the defeat in the Second Boer War 120 Boers reached the new settlement. Their descendants still make up a large part of the population. They speak Afrikaans and the opportunity to visit the Dutch Reformed Church.

Economy

The location in a valley between Lake and Lake Colhué Huapi pattern allows the cultivation of fruits such as cherries and raspberries.

Attractions

The two main attractions are the Petrified Forest and caves with paintings of the indigenous.
