Sarotherodon

Sarotherodon galilaeus

Sarotherodon (from Gr. Saroth ( e) ron " broom ", therizo " reap, mow " and odon, " tooth", refers to the bristle-like teeth) is a genus and is one of the cichlids ( Cichlidae ).

Features

Sarotherodon species have more gill Reuse teeth (10 to 28) on the lower part of the first branchial arch as tilapia ( 7-16). The mean of the lower pharyngeal bone is Länges in older animals from 27.5 to 43.5 % of the skull length. The Mesethmoid, a skull bone and the vomer ( vomer ) do not touch. Until recently, Sarotherodon species belonged to the genus Tilapia. Unlike those they are mouth brooders; these take both the females and the males the eggs to brood care in the mouth, while the only do when also recently defined genus Oreochromis females.

Occurrence

Originally in lakes and rivers alive they find in Africa and the Middle East is now the world in aquaculture systems and suspended or escape in warm subtropical lakes and rivers, where they displace the native fish in part.
