Sarumaru Dayū

Sarumaru no Taifu (Japanese猿 丸 大夫, also Sarumaru no Dayu; dates unknown ) was a Waka poets of the early Heian period. Sarumaru is also Tayu means the fifth court rank after ritsuryō system or even the fifth rank of a Shinto priest at Ise Shrine's actual name, Daiyu. He is one of the 36 immortals of poetry.

Little is known about the historical person and his life Sarumaru data. Some researchers even doubt its existence. Others argue Sarumaru was Prince Yamashiro no Ōe. The only mention Sarumaru found in the six imperial annals.

おく 山 に 紅葉 ふみわけ なく 鹿 の こ ゑきく 時ぞ 秋 は かなしき

Yama ni oku momiji fumiwake nakushika no Kowe kiku toki zo aki ha kanashiki

When in the forest deep and red I hear the plaintive cries of deer, as, wandering, on the leaves They tread, then autumn Seems indeed so drear.
