Sarzana

Sarzana is a small Italian town on the river Magra in the province of La Spezia in Liguria with 21,710 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012). Two fortresses shape the image of the place: the castle Fortezza di Sarzanello of Castruccio Castracane on a hill above the town, on their construction, among others Matteo Civitali participated, and the castle Firmafede (La Citadel ) in the historic center.

History

The name Sarzana is first mentioned in a document of Emperor Otto I of 19 May 963. You überneimmt a sense the successor of the ancient city of Luna, which was abandoned due to the gradual silting and thus malaria infestation and the former Saracen incursions. An upheaval took Sarzana in 1163, when it was directly subordinate to the emperor and thus raise Wegzoll and could be surrounded by a protective wall. Later Sarzana belonged alternately to Pisa, Lucca, Genoa and Florence. From 1562 Sarzana finally fell under the dominion of Genoa and Liguria.

Freeman

On November 29, 1953, a memorial plaque for Rudolf Jacobs was built on the Piazza San Giorgio, who had joined as a deserting army soldier of the Resistance. In addition, he was appointed posthumously honorary citizen of the city.
