Sassetta, Tuscany

Sassetta is a municipality in the province of Livorno in Tuscany with 534 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012).

Geography

Sassetta located in the Maremma, at an altitude of 330 m in a rocky environment. The place belongs to the Val di Cornia (Val di Cornia ), although he himself is not on the river Cornia. The name comes from Sasso (rock ) ago. The landscape is dominated by chestnut forests and scrub. To the east of the town, about 3 km away, there is a a thermal center.

The neighboring communities are Castagneto Carducci, Monteverdi Marittimo and Suvereto.

History

The town was first mentioned in 1238. In the Middle Ages the town was initially as a fief of the Orlandi family to Pisa, but came in the 16th century under various feudal lords to Florence. Since the 17th century it belonged again to Pisa. Due to its location on a hill, the place was already fortified by the Orlandi. Today, located at the highest point of the Palazzo Ramirez de Montalvo from the 16th century and the parish church ( Chiesa di Sant'Andrea ).
