Sasso Marconi

Sasso Marconi is a town with 14,536 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Bologna. The local Villa Marconi was since the 18th century summer residence of the industrial family.

Naming

The name of the village is made up of Sasso della Glosina, a rock wall from Contrafforte Pliocenico ( stone pillar of the Pliocene ), which dominates the valley at the confluence of the rivers Reno and Setta, and from the last name of Guglielmo Marconi, the famous scientist and entrepreneur. In the past the area as Praduro ( Hard meadow) and Sasso (rock ) had been called.

Geography

The municipality of Sasso Marconi is located in the low hills around the city of Bologna, between the bottom Reno valley and the lower catchment area of the river Setta in South - East and a part of the catchment area of the river Lavino in the West. The districts are located along the highway, which is called Porretana, an important local thoroughfare between the Po valley and Tuscany and in addition to the same railway line that runs along the highway. Traffic

Attractions

The villa Griffone at Pontecchio was since the mid 19th century summer residence of the Marconi family.
