Satellite (biology)

Satellites are subviral particles composed of a nucleic acid molecule and some proteins. They can be regarded as a dependent viruses that are not only able to replicate in a host cell. They need for their replication in addition one or even several helper viruses with which the host cell must be infected simultaneously ( coinfection ). The helper virus is required for the proliferation of the satellite functions. The host cell then produces instead of the virus mainly the satellite.

Satellites are taxonomically not yet registered. They are divided into different groups and therefore provisional subgroups: Encodes the genome of the satellites for a nucleocapsid, he is referred to as a satellite virus. Satellite viruses can not replicate autonomously in the rule. Virusoids other hand, can be independent of the helper virus to replicate, but do not encode a capsid.

Diseases by satellite are known ( tobacco, tomatoes, corn, gooseberries, etc.) almost exclusively in plants. Some were in fungi ( Ustilago maydis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and protists ( Trichomonas vaginalis ) found. For bees, the Chronic Bienenparalyse is caused by satellite.
