The Veliki Šator

The Veliki Šator is with 1872 m or 1875 m the highest peak of the massif Šator ( with the English meaning tent) in northwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina. The mountain range, part of the Dinaric Alps, which also includes the easternmost Mali Šator part ( 1768 m), extending between the Polje of Livno in the south and Drvar in the north, and forms part of a larger mountain range with the mountain ranges Jadovnik, Marino brdo, Staretina and Velika Golija, which reaches a height of 1890 m in the Velika Golija ( Veliki Vrh ).

Flora

The five main peaks of Šator tower over a dichtbewaldetes, with stock of beech, fir and spruce plateau 1500-1600 m altitude. The southern slopes of the massif are covered by meadows and flowers have a rich vegetation in summer. They served in the past as pasture.

Tourism

The scenic, snow-covered from November to May mountain is accessed via a road that leads over a distance of 17 km from Gornje Peulje on the road connecting Bosansko Grahovo Livno to the lake Satorsko Jezero ( 1488 m). This lake is of glacial origin, 250 m long and 120 m wide and 6 m deep. At the lake there is a small private accommodation house. Several slight increases lead to the summit from the lake.
