Saudade

Saudade is a Portuguese and Galician specific form of the world-weariness. The concept of saudade is specified by " sadness ", " sorrow ", translated "desire" or " gentle melancholy " comes close. The word stands for the nostalgic feeling of having lost something beloved, and often pushes the unhappiness and suppressed knowledge, the longing for what is lost can never be silent, since it will probably not return. Although the word comes from the Latin solitudo from, but by no means does it mean only " solitude ", because this is who or from the same root word solidão Soledade developed. Saudade is no per se negatively evaluated mood, but is in the fado, the Portuguese chanson yearned for.

The Portuguese have for generations proud of their " personal word " that only they know. So says one of the most famous quatrains Fernando Pessoa:

Saudades, só portugueses Conseguem senti -las bem. Porque TEM essa palavra para dizer que as TEM.

Saudades - only Portuguese can know that feeling. Because only they possess this word to really call it by its name.

Worldwide reception

2007 started off with a German jury, commissioned by the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations, Berlin, Saudade sixth place on the top ten most beautiful words in the world. A British survey of linguists and translators also elected Saudade in the top ten list of " untranslatable words in the world ."

The Brazilian guitarist and singer João Gilberto brought out in 1958 " Chega de Saudade ", written by Antonio Carlos Jobim (music) and Vinícius de Moraes ( text ), which is considered the first bossa nova song.

The South American guitarist and composer Agustin Barrios Mangore ( born in Paraguay in 1885, died in 1944 in El Salvador) wrote a piece called Chôro Da Saudade for guitar, which is part of many concert guitarists of the repertoire today. The British singer and composer Chris Rea has a song entitled Saudade published, which also emits a strong melancholy. Farin Urlaub sings Saudade in the B-side of OK in Portuguese.

The U.S. funk-metal band Extreme, published on 12 August 2008 an album titled Saudades de Rock.

The post- punk band Love and Rockets ( band ) set to music on her debut album from 1985 "Seventh Dream Of Teenage Heaven" the spherical worn piece of "saudade ".
