Saul Lieberman

Saul Lieberman ( born May 28, 1898 in Motal; † 23 March 1983 in near Jerusalem ) was an American rabbi and Talmudist Russian and Israeli origin.

Life

Lieberman was born in 1898 in Mortal in the Russian Empire (now Belarus ). He studied at the yeshiva in Kaunas and was ordained in 1916. In the 1920s, he began medical and Latin Studies at the National Taras Shevchenko University of Kiev.

In 1928 he went to Jerusalem, where he began a study of philology and literature at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Master of Arts). In 1931 he became a teacher at the Talmud Harry Fischel Institute for Talmudic Research in Jerusalem, which he headed from 1935 to 1940.

In 1940 he emigrated to the United States where he became a professor at the Jewish Theological Seminary ( JTSA ) in New York. 1949 he was appointed dean and rector of the JTSA 1958.

He was also for many years president of the American Academy for Jewish Research, Honorary Member of the Academy of the Hebrew language, as well as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Israel Academy of Sciences.

He was married to Judith Berlin (1904-1978), a daughter of Rabbi Meir Bar - Ilan.

Lieberman Clause

Named after Lieberman " Lieberman Clause" in the Jewish marriage contract ( ketubah ) provides that subject themselves in case of divorce with obstacles the spouse a rabbinical court ( Beth Din). It was introduced in the 1950s by conservative rabbis in the United States.
