Saumane-de-Vaucluse

Saumane -de- Vaucluse is a commune with 883 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Vaucluse in Provence -Alpes- Côte d' Azur region.

Location

The village lies to the east of Avignon, at the foot of the mountains of Vaucluse ( Monts de Vaucluse) and is four kilometers from Fontaine -de- Vaucluse and five miles from L' Isle- sur -la- Sorgue.

History

In the 12th century the castle was Saumane built on a hill above the city. During this period, the Romanesque church of Saint Trophimus was built.

1451 was the fief Saumane of Nicholas V ( pope ) to Baudet de Sade. The village remained in the possession of the house Sade until the end of feudalism. In the 16th century Baudets died out line so that the fief fell to another branch of the family.

1720 the village participated in the construction of Pestmauer, which should protect the venaissin from the plague from Provence.
