Sauveterre (Gard)

Sauveterre is a municipality with 1743 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Gard in the French region of Languedoc -Roussillon.

Geography

The municipality is located in 40 kilometers to the city of Nîmes and in each 15 kilometers distance to Orange and Avignon. In the east, the municipality is bordered by the Rhone, which forms the border with the department of Vaucluse.

Neighboring communities of Sauveterre are Roquemaure in the north, Avignon ( Vaucluse ) in the east, Villeneuve- lès -Avignon in the south and Pujaut in the West.

History

Before the French Revolution Sauveterre was only a hamlet, with forty to fifty houses. The inhabitants of the village were unprotected against attackers. The contract, which was signed on December 8, 1442 between Sauveterre and Roquemaure, residents while protecting against hackers, but also took them a lot of freedom. 1790 failed Sauveterre with trying to become a separate municipality. The experiment was done on the initiative of the priest, with the support of the Charterhouse of Villeneuve -lès -Avignon, which had in the field country. The community Roquemaure was against the independence Sauveterres. 60 years later the church was then still independent. In 1857 there were 888 inhabitants in Sauveterre and two municipal schools.

Twinning

Since 1999 there has been twinned with the Italian community Gaggio Montano.
