The Savannah / Hilton Head International Airport is an airport located in the city of Savannah in Chatham County in the U.S. state of Georgia.

History

The name of the airport was originally Savannah Municipal Airport was renamed in 1932 in Hunter Field. The United States Army Air Corps in 1942 took another rename in Chatam Army Airfield after the namesake of Chatham County's William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham Prime Minister of Britain. The Georgia Air National Guard, which today is still stationed at the airport, named the airfield in 1948 in Travis Field, by Robert F. Travis an officer of the United States Air Force in order. Renamed in 1983 in Savannah International Airport, the airport received its present name in 2003 Savannah / Hilton Head International Airport. The airport is located near Savannah and Hilton Head Island.

At the airport and the aircraft manufacturer Gulfstream Aerospace is located. He is served by airlines like Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, U.S. Airways, Allegiant Air and American Eagle Airlines.

Trivia

On the hard shoulder of a runway there are two grave slabs. An extension of the runway led through the family cemetery of the former owners. Since the grave stones may not be removed without the consent of the family, they were integrated into the runway.
