Savannakhet (actually Muang Kaysone Phomvihane after the first Prime Minister and third President of the Democratic People's Republic of Laos) is situated on the Mekong capital of the province of Savannakhet second largest in Central Laos and with approximately 120.000 inhabitants city in the country. Savannakhet is a commercial center ( river navigation and airport) with wood processing and food industry.

The nearby stupa That Ing Hang is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Laos. Savannakhet is known for his discovery of dinosaur remains and houses a dinosaur museum with attached workshop for the maintenance and replication of bone finds.

North of Savannakhet is the Second Thai - Lao Friendship Bridge across the Mekong.

According to the administrative divisions of the city of Savannakhet Laos is a district ( Muang ) named Kaysone Phomivahane.
