Šavnik (Cyrillic Шавник ) is a city and municipality of the same name ( Opština ) in northern Montenegro. The municipality covers 553 km ² and has 2,972 inhabitants (2003 ), making it the Montenegrin municipality with the smallest population. The village itself has only 600 inhabitants. The municipality consists of 27 settlements, of which Šavnik is the largest.

Geography

Šavnik lies at the confluence of the mountain streams Bukovica Šavnika and Bijela in a basin. a source of the river Piva. In the vicinity of the place is rough and mostly wooded mountain land that is sparsely populated. North of Šavnik is the Treskavac Mountains, which connects to the Durmitor massif and partially belongs to the national park.

History

Since 1878, Šavnik belongs to Montenegro. In the parliamentary elections in September 2006, the community had 80 %, the highest turnout in the country.

Population

At the 2011 census the municipality had 2,070 Šavnik inhabitants, of whom described themselves 1,114 ( 53.82 %) and Montenegrins and 878 ( 42.42 %) than Serbs.

Economy

The location is the center of the regional timber industry. Among the best known agricultural products of the municipality include fruits and honey, which is known throughout the country.

Tourism

Šavnik is merely a transit point on the road to Durmitor National Park, the village itself has only one hotel. However, the small town of Boan in the upper valley of the Bukovica will be expanded in the coming years to a small Ökotourismuszentrum.

Traffic

Šavnik is located midway on the regional road Nikšić after Zabljak. This was built in 1960 and is also the only developed connection to the rest of the country represents the roads to Kolasin or the pass road to Nikšić are difficult or impassable depending on the weather and season.

Attractions

In the village itself there is a small Roman bridge over the Bukovica. Near Šavnik are the monasteries Bijela and Podmalinsko, north of the town of Canyon Komarnica.
