Savo Island

Savo Iceland is about six times seven kilometer volcanic island northeast of the northern tip of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. Administratively it belongs to the province of the island nation Central Solomons. From the capital Honiara is about 35 km away.

The 485 m -high volcano on the island last erupted in the years from 1835-1850. An eruption was so powerful that it wiped out all life on the island. An elderly outbreak is occupied by 1568. According to the World Organization of Volcanic Observatories of the volcano every 100 to 300 years is active on Savo Iceland.

On the island there are geysers, hot mud lakes and springs. The on Savo -based, gehödende to the knobbed Bismarck chicken takes advantage of the existing geothermal, by digging deep holes in the warm volcanic soil and lays its eggs there. The chicks hatch without parental care after eight to nine weeks. In the waters around Savo many sharks live.

The island has become known as a place of five of the seven major naval battles during the Battle of Guadalcanal in the Pacific War. At the Battle of Savo Iceland Japanese and American naval units were offset by. Since the southeast of the island as a result of these battles are many shipwrecks, the lake is known there as Iron Bottom Sound. The wrecks lying near the coast are very popular with wreck divers.
