Savoie

The department of Savoie [ savwa ] (Eng. Savoy) is a French department of atomic number 73 It is in the east of the country in the Rhône-Alpes region on the border with Italy and is named after the landscape Savoy.

Geography

The department is bordered to the north by the department of Haute- Savoie, in the east and south by the Italian province of Turin and the Hautes -Alpes, on the west by the departments of Isère and Ain. 88 % of the area already belong to the Alps. The department of Savoie, making it the department with the größeten proportion of mountain land in France. The highest point is 3,855 m with the Grande Casse, the lowest point is at 210 m of the Lac du Bourget and the average height above sea level is 1500 m. Economy

Only one third of the floor of the department is suitable for agriculture. Of the total 90 028 hectares are arable and garden land, 65 033 artificial meadows, 55 482 natural meadows, 122 615 on forests, 9,912 acres on Weinland ( → for Viticulture see the article Savoie ( wine region ) ).

The main floor products other than cereals (about 1 million hl): potatoes, tobacco, hemp, chestnuts and wine ( 140,000 hl). In the vast rangelands livestock, especially cattle and sheep (1882 140 375 from the former, the latter of 89 533 units), very rewarding, and the silk weaving is worth mentioning. From the mineral kingdom, the admirable, everywhere existing building material, also coal and iron ore to be mentioned. Excellent mineral sources are located in Aix -les- Bains.

The industry extends primarily to silk weaving, manufacture of paper and then the rest is insignificant.

Traffic

The Mont Cenis Railway with branch paths to Albertville, Grenoble and Annecy cuts through the department.

Sports

The World Orienteering Championships were held in August 2011 in the Savoy.
