The station was built in the early 20th century on the initiative of the entrepreneur Savva Mamontov, at that time Chairman of the Moscow - Yaroslavl railway company. After the latter by Tsar Nicholas II received planning permission in 1897, the construction of a 130 km long railway line from Moscow to Kimry, which was later also extended until after Rybinsk began.

The reception building of the required to service the new route station was built from 1897 to 1902. As the site was selected a plot of land just outside the former city limits, in the resort Butirka (which is also its name to the distributors near Butyrka prison ) due to the relatively low land prices there. Of course, the Moscow City Council had already decided in 1900 an extension of the city limits, so the station was from now on to the city of Moscow. On March 23, 1902, the solemn inauguration took place. Originally called the station to its location Butyrski Vokzal.

The station building was on its completion only one floor, except for the two-story midsection, where official residences were located for the railway staff.

After the opening of Savyolovsky Station outlasted still a good 80 years without major reconstruction. Only towards the end of the 1980s, when there were problems due to increasing congestion of the building, an extension of the station was made. In the course of the reception building was continuously increased on two floors and thoroughly renewed. 1988 also got the Savyolovsky station long overdue subway connection, as the Serpuchowsko - Timirjasewskaja metro line was extended north to the station Savelovskaya.

In 2005, began as part of the plans for the airport rail link a new redevelopment of the station building. This case got a new, light brown paint instead of the original green, as well as the platforms were renewed.
