Sawa (Hrycuniak)

Sawa ( born April 15, 1938 in Śniatycze in Zamość, Poland; civil Michał Hrycuniak ) since 1998, Metropolitan of Warsaw and all over Poland the Polish Orthodox Church.

Sawa was ordained a bishop on 27 September 1964 a deacon, on March 6, 1966 and priest in St. Mary Magdalene Church in Warsaw on 25 November 1979. In 1970 he was Archimandrite. In 1979 he became associate professor of theology for the chair of dogmatic and moral theology at the Christian Theological Academy in Warsaw, its vice - rector between 1984 and 1990. Sawa was Bishop of Białystok and Gdańsk (1981-1998) and of Łódź and Poznań ( 1979-1981 ). On April 18, 1987, he became Archbishop. From 1994 to 1998 he headed the new Orthodox Military Ordinariate of the Polish Army. He was appointed by President Aleksander Kwasniewski, who honored him in 2000 with the Order of Polonia Restituta, to brigadier general in 1996. From 1980 to 1991 he was a member of the Working Committee "Faith and Order" of the World Council of Churches. On May 12, 1998, he was elected by the Council of Bishops of the Polish Orthodox Church leader.
