Sawdust

Wood chips are a by - product or waste in the machining of wood in sawmills and other areas of the wood processing industry and in the home.

Description

The wood chips are commonly referred to as sawdust when sawing and planing as the shavings. They differ depending on the technique used mainly in size composition, depending on the wood species and origin, they also include beef shares or are produced from bark Wi wood. Grinding dust and sawdust are characterized by the very small size of its particles, while shavings and coarse sawdust may form fractions from wooden pegs and flakes.

In the lumber production of Sägeholzanfall is around 60 % of the main product timber. In Germany well falls a third of the annual volume of sawmill by-products of approximately 17.0 million cubic meters as sawdust and sawdust, more than half are wood chips and the rest are slabs and splinters.

Use

The costs incurred in Germany amounts of wood chips are used virtually the whole cover together with other industrial waste wood fractions over one-third of the raw material needs of the wood products industry. The share of sawmill by-products of the wood particle board is around 50 %, in the medium-density fibreboard ( MDF) is 70 %. The pulp and pulp industry uses relatively small amounts of wood offcuts from industry, for the production of pulp or wood pulp the wood used but also machined and then further processed. A direct use find shavings also as animal bedding, while sawdust is used among other things as an oil binding absorbent material in workshops or after accidents.

For the thermal insulation of wood chips from spruce and fir timber are processed into various natural insulating materials: lots of wood shavings and it produced wood fibers are as blow-in or pour-in insulation used, processed into sheets come wood fibers as wood-wool board and wood fiber insulation on the market.

Wood chips are used energetically to a major part as fuel, although for many of these materials, the inclusion in material use, especially in the wood products industry, a larger value. The demand for wood shavings for the pellet and briquette production increases for several years too, thus increasing the demand for this commodity.

A product of the arts and crafts is the spanning tree. Known as Fidibus wood chip on the thickness of a match is used in the so-called glowing splint.

Flammability

Sawdust and shavings in dust grain size distribution can result in a blend, which burns with the ignition of a dust explosion in air. The large surface area of fine-grained wood and the sufficient standing ready with its distribution in the air oxidants accelerate namely the combustion reaction to explosive curves.
