The Sawtooth Schnepfenaale ( Serrivomeridae ) (Latin serra = saw = vomer vomer ) pelagic life in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans in deep waters 1000-4500 m deep.

Features

The fish are 40 to 80 inches long. Their jaws are narrow and elongated. On the vomer teeth sit in two or more rows. The tail of the sawtooth Schnepfenaale ends in a thread. The gill openings are connected to each other on the belly side. The elongated fish have 137-170 vertebrae. They are mostly black with silvery flanks. The larvae of Serrivomeridae migrate to the surface at night.
