Saxe-Eisenberg

Sachsen -Eisenberg was a ernestinisches Duchy in the northeast of present-day Free State of Thuringia. It was from 1680 to 1707.

History

By Erbteilungsvertrag 1680 among the seven sons Duke Ernest I. " the Pious " of Saxe- Gotha was, inter alia, the Duchy of Saxe -Eisenberg, which was awarded the fifth son Christian.

But the Duchy received no sovereignty. For Duchy included the offices Camburg, Roda, Ronneburg and Eisenberg residence. In the period 1680-1692 there, the castle was rebuilt in the Baroque castle Christiansburg and there was the Castle Church as the most beautiful Baroque church in Thuringia. However, the buildings have led to indebtedness of the small country that tried to reduce by alchemical experiments of Herzog.

With the death of the childless Duke Christian in 1707 went out and fell to the Duchy of Saxe-Gotha -Altenburg.
