The ostrich - saxifrage ( Saxifraga cotyledon ) is a species of the genus Saxifrage ( Saxifraga ) in the family Saxifragaceae ( Saxifragaceae ).

Features

The ostrich - saxifrage is a perennial plant that reaches the plant height of 20 to 80 centimeters. The stately plant produces up to 15 centimeters wide rosettes. The rosette leaves are 20-60 mm long, 10-15 mm wide and widen to the front. You are mucronate or obtuse, leathery and have the edge forwardly directed saw teeth and fine Kalkschüppchen. The stem is erect to pendulous, densely glandular, forming almost from the base of the panicle branched, pyramidal inflorescence. The petals are white, oval and 6 to 11 millimeters in size.

Bloom time is from June to August.

The species has the chromosome number 2n = 28

Occurrence

The ostrich - saxifrage comes in the Pyrenees, the Alps and in Northern Europe ( Scandinavia and Iceland ) in humid crevices on silicate of valleys at altitudes of 2600 meters.
