In the state elections in Saxony -Anhalt in 2002 on 21 April 2002, the fourth state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt was chosen. There were 2,109,428 residents eligible to vote; the voter turnout was 56.5 %. Was elected in 49 constituencies.

Starting position

In the 1998 state elections, the SPD had received 35.9 % of the vote under Prime Minister Reinhard Hoeppner and governed in a minority government tolerated by the PDS (Cabinet Hoeppner II, see also the Magdeburg model).

Election result

The SPD lost 15.9 percentage points, the CDU won almost to the same extent added voices. The FDP was achieved with a gain of 9.1 percentage points of re-entry into the state parliament. The PDS improved their results only marginally. The DVU, which had received 1998 12.9 % of the votes came, not to again.

The CDU won in 48 of the 49 constituencies and thus won eight overhang seats. After the Saxony-Anhalt state election law was added the same number of compensatory mandates, so that the number of deputies in the new parliament increased from 99 to 115.

Consequences

CDU and FDP formed a black-yellow coalition, Wolfgang Böhmer ( CDU) became the new Prime Minister of Saxony -Anhalt (Cabinet Böhmer I).
