Saxton Pope

Saxton Temple Pope ( born September 4, 1875 in Fort Stockton Texas; † August 8, 1926 ) was an American archer.

He studied at the University of California and received his doctorate there in 1899 as a doctor of medicine. On August 29, 1911, Ishi, the last Yahi Indians went into the hands of the whites. After Pope was in 1912 made ​​the acquaintance of the American Indian and earned his trust, he was instructed by it in the Indian methods of hunting and the Bogenbaues.

After the death of Ishi Pope undertook with his friend Art Young different safaris on which they hunted grizzly bears and other dangerous game. Along with Young, he was a pioneer of modern bow hunting in the United States.

Pope died in 1926 after returning from Africa with pneumonia.
