SBB-CFF-FFS RABDe 12/12
RABDe 12/12 is the series designation of a three-part series trainsets of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB ), which were commissioned in 1967. The procurement of 20 trainsets made in view of the introduction of the half-hour clock on the right bank Zürichseebahn ( Zurich -mile Rapperswil SG) in order to maintain the tight schedule of the so-called Gold Coast can. The trains were originally - in the SBB one exception - a wine-red color scheme and were given because of their work on the Gold Coast the nickname "Gold Coast Express"; also prevalent was the nickname " Mirage ."
The trains reached up to 125 km / h and consisted of two second-class end cars and intermediate cars with a first class and a baggage compartment. With the introduction of the S -Bahn Zurich they were from the new double -decker commuter trains ( DPZ ) displaced to other lines. The modernized in the 1990s trains dropped out at the end of 2008 from regular operations and served initially as a reserve. In mid-2010 the last Mirage was scrapped.
Operation
RABDe the 12/12 are provided with automatic two-sided GF couplings in order to ensure efficient operation. The three vehicles of a unit are mutually kurzgekuppelt and can not be separated in normal operation. Because the seating capacity of a unit is normally not sufficient tractions were mostly in use; Up to four units can be coupled together in multiple-unit operation.
Accidents / tracings / conversions
Of the 20 compositions in 1971 within two months, a total of severely damaged four compositions in two accidents. In Herrliberg the unit trains collided in 1119 and 1109 in Uerikon it hit the trainsets in 1117 and 1113. Collision Each drew two end cars and intermediate cars so heavily affected that the cars were supplied to the crash. From the intact parts and two uninvolved compositions ( 1106 and 1111), four-engine trains were reassembled. This resulted in the "new" unit trains 1109II and 1113II, while the EMU was redrawn in 1120 1117II. From the surplus still usable Mittelwagen a catenary observation car was prepared by the main workshop Zurich, which was put into operation in 1980.
After 30 years of operation, the remaining 18 trainsets ( 1101-1118 ) was from 1996, a total revision (R4 ) subjected and according to the new numbering scheme as RABDe 510000-510017 labeled. The most striking change to the RABDe 510 is use the repainting according to the color scheme for regional vehicles (light gray / blue ) which SBB since the NPZ ( " Hummingbird "). The vehicles were in the modernization yellow exterior swinging doors, analogous to the NPZ.
Curiosities
The unassuming pillar in the middle of the center entrance platforms of the two end cars does not primarily serve as a handle for passengers, but also leads the 15 kV traction power supply for high voltage technology under the passenger compartment. Also noteworthy is the fact that all axes of these vehicles are driven, which is unusual for regional trains. This fact together with the high performance make these vehicles a very high acceleration capability, giving them the nickname " Mirage " earned (after the Dassault Mirage fighter aircraft, which was purchased at the same time by the Swiss army ). For railway fans used to be interesting, that they belonged together with the BDe-4/4- and RBe 4/4-Triebwagen to those SBB vehicles where the passenger could look to the engineer on the shoulder and go with his consent in the cab; However, since the conversion R4 of the cab shall be deemed a separate room, and entering is thus prohibited.
Use
While most vehicles of the train until the 1980s had a pine green color, marked the RABDe 12/12 with its dark red color, the appearance of the right bank Zürichseebahn. Occasionally they were also on the left bank of Lake Zurich, in the st. Gallic Linthgebiet and can be found in the Glarus region. Finally, the RABDe 510 perverted mainly on the line S16 of the Zurich S-Bahn.
