Scadoxus

Scadoxus multiflorus

Scadoxus is a plant genus of the family of the Amaryllis family ( Amaryllidaceae ). They are closely related to the blood flowers ( Haemanthus ) and were asked a long time with them in a genus.

Occurrence

The genus comprises nine species Scadoxus who have their natural habitat in Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. All Scadoxus species thrive in summer rainfall areas.

In Central Europe, this plant species are cultivated in greenhouses or only rarely as a houseplant.

Description

Scadoxus species grow as perennial herbaceous plants. These geophytes form just below the earth growing, large and thick onions as outlasting. The leaves are compared to Haemanthus thin, smooth -operating with an eye-catching main nerve and one like a petiole base narrowed.

The plants of this genus are already starting to bloom when the leaves are not yet fully expelled. This feature divides the genus with the most Haemanthus species. Scadoxus - species bloom mainly in spring ( Scadoxus multiflorus ssp. Katharinae However, in late summer ).

System

The two closely related genera Scadoxus and Haemanthus belong to the tribe Haemantheae within the family of the Amaryllis family ( Amaryllidaceae ).
