Scala Regia (Vatican)

The Scala Regia is a staircase in the Vatican City in Rome, which is part of the official entrance of the Vatican.

The staircase is located behind the Portone di brooklyn in Bernini's colonnade and connects St. Peter's Basilica, the punches and the Sistine Chapel. It was built in the Younger in the 16th century by Antonio da Sangallo and renewed from 1663 to 1666 by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. In order to achieve a monumental effect, Bernini has rejuvenated the staircase to the top.

At the foot of the stairs the equestrian statue of Constantine the Great is by Bernini ( 1663-1670 ). The rider sits on a horse rising and looks upwards on a monogram of Christ with the inscription IN HOC SIGNUM VINCES ( " In this sign you will conquer "). The legendary scene from the Battle of the Milvian Bridge Constantine's co-emperor Maxentius against symbolizes the beginning of Christianity as the state religion.
