Shed fin wrasse ( Acantholabrus palloni )

The shed fin wrasse ( Acantholabrus palloni ) is a species of wrasse, which is prevalent in the Northeast Atlantic, the North Sea and the Baltic and the Mediterranean.

Features

The shed fin wrasse has a laterally flattened, elongated body and reaches a body length of up to 25 centimeters. The top head has a comparatively large, terminated its mouth. Back and flanks are light brown to reddish, the color of the belly is bright at the top of the tail, the fish have a large black saddle spot.

The dorsal fin has 19 to 21 fin rays and hard after 7 to 10 soft anal fin 4-6 hard, 5-8 soft fin rays. The pelvic fins are breast constantly. In total there are 39 to 45 scales along the lateral line.

Dissemination

The shed fin wrasse is found in the northeastern Atlantic from Norway and Britain to West Africa and in the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands and the Mediterranean.

Way of life

The fish live in the littoral rocky and sandy coasts at depths up to 60 meters, in the Mediterranean and up to 250 to 500 meters. They feed mainly on crustaceans, worms and molluscs.
