Proteus (Model 281 ) is a - named after the Greek deity Proteus - privately funded twin-engine jet aircraft with tandem wing for a pilot and two passengers.

Designed and built by Burt Rutan, the aircraft was and his company Scaled Composites. It has a wingspan of 23.65 meters, which can be extended with detachable wingtips up to 28 meters.

Proteus can be considered one of the forerunners of the carrier aircraft White Knight. It is currently owned by the aircraft manufacturer Northrop Grumman and is used by the Defense Department of the United States and NASA as a research and height platform for unmanned robotic aircraft.
