Scandola Nature Reserve

Since 1975 Situated on the west coast of Corsica near Porto Peninsula Scandola is provided as a nature reserve under the supervision of the authority of the Parc Naturel Regional de la Corse. Meanwhile, it has been included by UNESCO in the list of World Natural Heritage.

Scandola is the oldest nature reserve in Corsica and France, and its location is unique in the Mediterranean. It can be reached only on foot or in one of the many tour boats that leave from Porto or Calvi.


From the sea protrude steep, red-colored rocks. In the south, the peninsula is bounded by the Gulf of Porto and the north by the Bay of Galeria. The rocks originated about 250 million years ago.

After the orogeny, the area between Galeria and Monte Cinto sustained as a result of volcanic eruptions, primarily from the rhyolite and ignimbrite ( ignimbrite ) that are up red-black- purple colored from yellow to green.


The only way to reach the area from the shore, is a 4.5 hour hike that starts at the Col de la Croix on the coastal road between Porto and Calvi. The path leads through the macchiebewachsene coastal scenery and has the goal with the red rocks always in view. The trail ends in the otherwise accessible only by boat place Girolata.
